Arterial insufficiency

Definition:

An inadequate blood flow through arteries. Involvement of the arteries of the brain can cause symptoms of stroke. The specific symptoms can indicate, to some extent, which artery is involved. Anterior inferior cerebellar artery syndrome involves symptoms of inflammation or occlusion of the anterior inferior cerebellar artery (in the brain). Basilar insufficiency involves one of the branches of the carotid artery. It branches off to become the posterior cerebral arteries.

Arterial insufficiency can affect many different parts of the body. Atherosclerotic disease is one of the most common causes of arterial insufficiency.
